Have you ever been in a "flowerstorm"?
. . . .
We hadn't up until last weekend and it was spectacular.
M. and I were privileged to witness the majestic and beautiful Queen Lilioukalani Festival. Every year on her birthday over 400 hula dancers take part in paying their respects to the last monarch of Hawaii - Queen Liloukalani.

We made it there on our bikes right as groups started presenting their beautiful lei's to a portrait of Queen Liloukalani. They would sing a chant or prayer to her and then a response was given by a representative of her (or so we thought . . .but it was a guy hmmm). It was a lovely procession but we felt bad for all the well dressed men and women. It was an extremely hot day. SO HOT!!!
Then the hula groups started dancing and singing a chant. The whole garden was completely covered in hula dancers ranging from little ones to the older generations. The little ones were SO darling. As the helicopter bearing the flowers began pouring the thousands of flowers down on us the band started in and the traditional hula dance began. It was a truly amazing thing to witness. I recommend it to anyone visit Hilo in September.

Since we live right next to an exquisite fishing pond, we felt that purchasing fishing gear was a good investment. Today was our first day out on the lagoon . . .no success sadly but we greatly enjoyed the beauty and wildlife. We saw a sea turtle passing us on it's way back to the ocean (not many people can say that when fishing), a toad that sounded like a lion, a gaggle of geese, several families of ducks, and what we thought was an albatross (turns out it probably wasn't).
The fish were totally teasing us. They'd jump a foot away from where our lures were. Not cool. Someday we'll find out what bait is correct for this new environment of ours. Any feedback is welcome. : )

I'm headed on an adventure for the next two weeks and M. is far too busy with school to update our Gone Surfing blog . . .so I'm taking a two week sabbatical. When I return, however, I'll have a story or two to tell. I promise that.
We miss you Utah . . .but we've Gone Surfing.
