We've been told by many locals that a car is not needed if you live in Hilo . . .except when it rains. Well, it rains a lot. Especially now that we are currently in Hurricane Season. However, luckily for us the mountains shield us from most hurricanes (so we've been told). We absolutely love biking around town; seriously SO fun! It's a love/hate relationship though since biking in the rain is not the most pleasant thing. We've established a system though . . .if it's misting we're okay . . .if it's a downpour then we're walking with our industrial strength umbrellas. So far it's worked great.
We've found another unique gem a couple of blocks away from our apartment - Big Island Candies. Seriously when you walk past the factory you can smell the sugar and chocolate in the air - YUM!! They are known for their unique chocolates including - potato chip crunch and chocolate dipped squid. Definitely a touristy destination, they make some delicious morsels.
We've loved our first week thus far here in Hilo. We miss our family and friends but we're SO grateful for this adventure we're on. The below picture pretty much sums up Hilo . . .it's a jungle out there.
We miss you Utah . . .but we've Gone Surfing!
