Today it finally stopped raining so we were able to further explore our new home. The beautiful Liliuokalani Garden is a must see site in Hilo. Named after Queen Liliuokalani, the last monarch in Hawaii, it's filled with beautiful banyan trees, meandering paths, and elegant bridges. The pools of water you see above we believe to be filled with "brackish" water, a mixture of fresh spring water, rainfall, and sea water, where you'll find a variety of exotic fish and cute little crabs. We discovered the beautiful banyan trees are stock full of wild cats. Smart cats; I'd stay in those trees too. We found a nest of little kittens . . .they didn't like us.
We also visited in the infamous Coconut Island. This small island is THE place to have parties and family gatherings. As you cross the bridge from the main island to Coconut Island a small sign greets you saying " Watch out for falling coconuts". : )

Our first Pioneer's Day away from home we missed the Bountiful carnival, main street parade, and epic family gatherings . . . SO we went out and had our first Hawaiian shave ice. All I can say is YUM! M. had melon flavored topped with caramel and mochi and I had mango flavored. It was topped with sweetened condensed milk, fresh mochi, and boba. Highly recommended.
To top the night off we had a surprise at our front door. This wasn't a good surprise.
After a pleasant bike ride home M. flipped on the front porch light and there it was . . .a spider as big as a dinner plate. Up until that point I had not seen a single spider and THEN we were standing face to face with this monstrosity. We ninja sneaked past it and slammed the door. I have found a flaw in Hilo. I still love it though.
We miss you Utah but . . .we've Gone Surfing!!
